What it’s like to work with a dietitian

by | Mar 13, 2025

At Balance Chaos, our approach to nutrition involves meeting our clients where they are at. We will talk about balanced meals & food choices that align with your life, factoring in your time, tastes, culture, and social life.

Will you be critical of what I eat? Will you tell me to stop eating all my favorite foods?

Our meetings are a judgment free zone, and we’re here to help you! We are not the food police. Our goal is not to bring you more shame and guilt about your food or exercise. In fact, we want to help you develop a healthy relationship with food and make choices that are aligned with your goals and values, not rooted in self-punishment or self-criticism.

No, we don’t recommend strict meal plans or complicated recipes (but we do provide therapeutic meal plans for additional guidance, and we might sent you some recipe ideas that fit your lifestyle, if that’s your thing). What we do is much closer to therapy on the subject of food and nutrition than it is to writing a meal plan or calculating macros. Still, we are in the business of nutrition and fitness…. and we love to provide structure and clarity to our sessions. Here’s some things we provide:

Regular Nutrition Meetings & Check-ins

We meet for nutrition follow-up appointments as often as you need for support and accountability. In the beginning, many clients find that weekly meetings are best to establish a good nutrition foundation, answer all their questions, and troubleshoot issues. Eventually, clients move to meeting every other week, monthly, and then as needed for support. During each meeting, we might…

  • Review your food logs or food choices, what you felt went well and what didn’t, and any nutrition questions that you had in the last week.
  • Recap an “out of control” or restrictive food episode, what led up to it, and how you can address that situation with more knowledge and clarity (and self-compassion) next time.
  • Talk about how to properly fuel and hydrate for an upcoming workout or competition.
  • Create a flexible meal plan, together.
  • Discuss lab tests and any recommended supplements.
  • Reflect on your overall mindset and outlook on your progress—what are you doing to celebrate your successes?

Resources & Workbooks

Depending on what we talk about, after each meeting we might send resources, worksheets, recommend reading, videos, podcasts, workbooks, recipes, meal plans, or recommended lab testing. These resources will help you better understand and practice the knowledge and skills we discussed in our meeting throughout the next week or until we meet again.

Accountability & Goal Setting

At the end of each meeting, we might set 1-3 habit goals for you to work on until we meet again, and we will check-in and troubleshoot any issues that came up in your life that might have thrown you off track and prevented you from completing these habits. Again, this is a judgment-free zone! If you struggle to complete any habits, we will work on identifying barriers and developing a compassionate mindset, instead of spiraling into shame, guilt, and negative self-talk.

This is how we make progress.

There is no quick fix… but I promise, you can still feel supported with clarity and step-by-step guidance in your journey.
